Questions about running with no muffler
the law states that you need a muffler and it be in good working condition but never stated that it had to be installed in the exhaust system... just get a cheepest muffler you can find and toss it and the box in the bed of your truck... thats the way id do it... fight the power!

Well, I went out today to try and get a straight pipe to replace the muffler. One place told me that they would have to put it on, they don't cut pieces for people b/c they can't guarantee the fit, so it would be like $100. Another place didn't have their custom exhaust guy at work. And a couple other places were closed. The chain auto parts store didn't carry the length of pipe I needed. I needed 38".
So while I was driving around, the noise in the cab was starting to get pretty bad, so I decided to talk to a couple places about a muffler. The one that had what I needed in stock ended up recommending the Flowmaster American Thunder 40 series. We had talked and I told him I was leaning towards the Delta 50 series b/c I didn't want to be insanely loud and he agreed. When he brought the truck around, I absolutely loved it. It had the nice, deep rumbling sound at idle/low speed and when he revved it up, it just got louder. The sound is amazing. I was very surprised that the 50 series would do that and was glad I made the right choice, well until we went inside.
I told him it sounded great and that's when he told me that after realizing that I didn't have a Hemi and that I wanted to stay with a single pipe, he put the 40 series on. It cost me $100 installed and he told me if I didn't like it, he would swap it out for $25.
The drive home was nice. There is hardly any noise in the cab, but outside of the cab, it sounds awesome. Now, I haven't had a chance to take it on the hwy yet, so I don't know about the cabin drone people talk about at hwy speeds, but so far, I love it. And I didn't lose much of the loudness going from muffler-less to having this muffler.
It's a huge difference from just taking the muffler off. It now has a refined, deeper tone to it and like I said, I hardly hear anything in the cab and for $100 installed, you can't beat it. Plus, I won't ever have to worry about passing cops and hoping I won't get pulled over b/c I don't have a muffler. I'm all legal now.

This is the most “aggressive†sounding street/strip muffler that Flowmaster offers. If you're looking for attention, this one will get you noticed. The standard 40 series has an “aggressive rumble" and will generally resonate inside the vehicle around 1800-2000 rpm’s, and again at 2400-2600 rpm’s. You hear it in the cab but the tone outside the cab is worth it. When I idle you hear the Blurb Blurp Blurp of the engine turning over. If you are not bothered by noise it makes driving more fun. Also at 3 bucks a gallon on base here in Europe at least I get more enjoyment out of the truck. Also when I come up on people walking on the road or bikers I down shift and thats as good or better than honking at them.

ummmm......what does that have to do with anything, mufflers are not engine specific, ive ran glasspacks on ford escorts and california turbos on a chevy 305. Sounds to me like the guy fed you a line. He either didnt have your muffler in stock or wanted more cash

Obviously you have no clue what you are talking about. If they weren't made to specific engines, then wouldn't there just be one universal muffler for all cars? You CAN run any muffler on any car, but there are specific mufflers built for specific engines. That's why Flowmaster has different models. And the guy wasn't feeding me ****, the 50 Series that I wanted was going to be $125, but he didn't think I would have liked it, so he put the 40 on which was $25 cheaper.

Your right, mufflers are not made for each type of engine, they are just made for size and type of sound you want. just like a glasspack, different sizes but they all do

Flowmaster mufflers are not made for specific cars. The reason I don't think you would be happy with the 50 series is that it isn't as loud as the 40 series thats why I assume he was telling you to go with the 40. If he was telling you the 50 series wasn't made for your engine he was feeding you BS the differnce in the models is the tone and volume of the mufflers and thats about it.
All that matters is that the guy is HAPPY with what he got.......right?
I love my dual out Flow 40. Been there, done that, like Tani 1500 said - you can buy a cheap muffler and cut it at the seams, remove the guts, and weld it back together. I used to do this with Cherry Bomb mufflers back in the day to f@#k with the cops.

I have true dual straight pipes on my 99 5.2. Starts out as 2.5" of the headers bumps up to 2.75" then two 24" long 5" tips. I have never had any back pressure problems. The guy that did my exhaust made a "H" pipe and put the sensors in the "H" no check engine light yet had it on over a month. Mean sounding, plug your ears loud, really gets the heads turning.
