Won't shift after warmed up
 

Truck shifts fine when the motor and transmission is cold. As soon as the truck gets warmed up, it won't shift at all. And if it does, it makes an extremely loud squealing noise. I was told it was some kind of sensor. But wanted a second opinion. I was also told it was the clutches. But the clutches are fairly new. The truck is a 2001 model ram 1500 5 speed with a 4:11 rear end. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Manual or automatic? (auto is a four speed, with lockup converter)

Who did the clutch work, and when?

A shop near me. Can't remember the name right off. It was done a couple years ago. The previous owner had it done. And it's a 5 speed manual.

Does it start squealing when you push in the clutch, or when you try and shift into the next gear? Checked fluid level in the trans? Clutch pedal feel any different when the engine warms up?

It squeals when it's in gear and when it tries to go in gear when warmed up. the clutch doesn't feel any different. I checked trans fluid and was actually 3 quarts over! Drained it to propper level, seemed to work better after that but problem soon came back. I even drained an extra quart out of the transfer case. When it's idling in neutral, I can still kind of hear a small squealing noise. Just now heard it while it was idling

Sounds like it may be time for a new clutch and/or throwout bearing.......

Whoo whee. Lol. Sounds like quite a job. There's also a sensor on top of the bell housing. It was broken. Just found that too. Any idea on what that thing may be? Or if it's even needed? And how big of a project is it to change the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing etc..?

Does the truck still run? Only sensor up there that I am aware of, is the crank position sensor, and yes, that one is required to make the engine run.

Gotta drop the trans to replace all the clutch stuff. It's a job..... 2wd isn't too bad, 4x4 adds some complications.

I have the battery unplugged right now. The sensor fell apart when I disconnected it. So I'm near positive it doesn't run now. Unfortunately. And I'm gonna try to tear into the trans next month. Gonna have to pay close attention to what I'm doing lol. Any idea on where I can get a new sensor? Auto zone, advanced auto, o'riellys? Or is it gonna be like trying to find buried treasure? Lol

You want to get a crank sensor from the dealer. Our trucks REALLY don't like aftermarket sensors in critical locations.
