Default Check engine light, no codes, engine dies when punched

Hi,

I tried the "trick" of turning the ignition to on then off then on then off then on and did not see any codes that could point to my check engine problem and stalling shutting off when I punch the gas.

I did find that the air cleaner was loose, apparently the dude at mopar had it off to do the tranny flush or radiator flush a hundred or so miles ago. It was loose, I could move the breather around. I tightened it down and reseated the tps (the sensor on the tb on the same side where you tighten the cleaner, still check engine light and no codes. the engine dies when punched.

could and oxygen sensor go bad and not generate a code? I know I need to clean the TB, but I cannot imagine that causing the problem all of a sudden. I never had performance issues before.

If it's as simple as the o2 sensor, I can replace that my self. It's a 98 model, built in 9/97 w/original o2 sensors w/just over 56k miles.

a while ago when troubleshooting a check light from a a/c issue, mopar replaced the pcm and the tps , neither have 5k on them.

any ideas?

i had the similar problem after a ECT sensor went bad on me i had to take the stock airbox off to replce it .. afte ri was done i put the airbox back on but didnt seat it right and had a nice gap where it meats the tb.. and did the same thing you were doing.. i reseated it and it worked great.. obviously your ect sensor isnt causing it.. but not having the airbox on right could have made your tb really dirty..try taking the tb off and cleaning it really good with some carb and tb cleaner and try that.. and disconect your battery for 10 mins... it may help.. goodluck

Fuel pump going bad? I had another Mopar vehicle that when the fuel pump when, the car would start up a idle, but as soon as I hit the gas it would die.

The "trick" you referred to sounds like the procedure for pulling the codes on 1994-1997 Rams (and a few other Mopars's). It won't work on the 1998 and newer trucks because of the new OBD II computer system installed on these trucks. The only way I'm aware of to pull codes on 98 and newer is with a reader capable of reading OBD II codes. Those readers are a little pricey, but necessary if you want to diagnose your own problems.
