Default oil guage issues [time for a revisit ]

ok guys
have a 97 4x4 slt club cab 103898 miles...few weeks ago had a blown intake manifold ...replaced gasket ....$$$ ... few weeks 2-3 later OIL gauge starts dropping to say 30 psi never ever came off of [40 till now ] replace sending unit cheap fix seemed ok couple of days...driving down HW at 60 mph hear a faint valve tap back off tap goes away ....speed up comes back...ok so exit ramp engine sounds good but gauge down to say 27-29 psi oil light flickering...drive for a few days gauge just floats around light flickering...ok mechanic says time for a oil pump ....its done another $$$.... heres the question... the oil gauge still floats around but has not dropped below 30 psi so far and didnt notice the light flickering and not hearing any more tapping....is this normal for a oil gauge to fluctuate ? only thing i did not replace was the gauge kinda feel like i got talked into something that may not of been necessary...anybody's thoughts ???

When dealing which oil pressure related issues, the thing you have to start by doing is checking for oil pressure with a mechanical guage. The electric gauges are not reliable in out trucks, but when I’m driving my psi on the electric guage stays about 40, and at idle is on 40. That’s usually where the dodges run according to the electric guage.

What i I would do if I were you is grab a mechaical guage from the parts store, might be able to rent it, and check you oil pressure and see what it actually is.

Another thing to consider, what brand sensor did you put in? The cheap ones like to cause problems.
