99 Dodge issues

I have a 99 dodge ram with a 5.9 and its just a winter driver, today I tried to start it and it fired right up but sounded weak and gasping for air. Wouldnt really idle then when I gave it gas it just dies and takes a while for it to start back up again. When vehicle is started sounds like its puffing for a big breath. Not sure what it could be. I hear the fuel pump. Is there a way to test it out or anyone have ideas?

HeyYou 04-05-2018 09:27 PM

There is a shrader valve on the drivers side fuel rail, to screw a fuel pressure gauge to. (which you can rent at the local parts store.) Check that first.

99black 04-06-2018 06:15 PM

Checked fuel pressure and checks out good. Pump is working and had a friend with a power probe confirm

racefan41 04-06-2018 06:44 PM

you say it sounds like its gasping for air. if someone is cranking the engine do you hear a vacuum leak somewhere while you're under the hood, or does the engine just sound like its bogging?

HeyYou 04-06-2018 07:34 PM

Clogged cat?

Ramman18 04-07-2018 01:56 AM

Clean the IAC and throttle body and try again. Just don't push the plunger at all.

Michael92 04-07-2018 10:19 AM

You've confirmed fuel for the most part, make sure there's spark. Then see why it's not getting air. Probably faulty iac witch you can test by taking it off the back off throttle body, with connector on it turn the key to on but not run and verify the plunger moves, idk if it's all the way in or out. I think in. Or download the manual in the stickys. Also read the end all plenum thread.

99black 04-09-2018 08:32 PM

spark is looking good and while I was at it changed all the plugs. I took out the iac and it was covered in sludge so I cleaned it off and still a no go. Is it suppose to squish becuase mine is stiff

Michael92 04-09-2018 08:42 PM

If it's covered in sludge then more then likely the channel for it is also clogged/sludged. It's gunna be stiff, only time it'll move is if you leave it plugged into the connector and turn key on engine off, should move to verify it's not stuck.
I'd pull the throttle body and clean the channel at the back of the intake where the iac channel meets the intake manifold, along with throttle body and ports.

HeyYou 04-10-2018 08:33 AM

Don't turn the engine on with the IAC removed, and plugged in. It turns the pintle into a missile. :)

Michael92 04-10-2018 08:49 AM

Sorry about the mis-information. I just swear when I read my Haynes last time that was proper procedure on testing the function of the iac besides all the back probing with a volt meter. I've done it myself also and it moved slower then a turtle lol

true blue 04-10-2018 10:26 AM

While the hissing sound is notorious for the IAC valve problem, it could also be a horrendous vacuum leak, a cam timing problem or a clogged cat. start simple n work your way up. 1)If it's the IAC, you can leave it unplugged and start the pick up and see if the problem goes away. 2)If there's a bad vacuum leak, this can confuse the ECM because it only knows to look for air coming in where the mad scientist who designed it told it to look. 3)If the timing chain is stretched bad enough or jumped time, the cam lobes open and close the valves at the rong time giving off a weird chugging noise from the throttle body. 4)If the cat's clogging/clogged, think constipation...does your exhaust sound deep n throaty when "vrooming" or weak n asthmatic. Pulling the upstream O2 sensor n starting the pick up will help determine this possibility. And under the heading of last but certainly not least...is the check engine light on?

HeyYou 04-10-2018 04:27 PM

Not my experience. On mine, the PCM pushed the pintle OUT, until it shot off into the yard, and was forever lost.......

Michael92 04-10-2018 04:32 PM

Hahahah! Kinda funny but dang that sucks. That could've been your sign of your very own bad iac lol I know last time I took one apart, it has threads on the bar for the pintle with the spring under it.. yours had probably been so worn it did that. Still,, pretty funny lol:icon_clapclap:

I am sure the look on my face was quite amusing. :) Unfortunately, it was a 'new' IAC I was testing from another truck. (P0505 code.....)

Michael92 04-10-2018 06:03 PM

Hah probably priceless. Let's just be thankfull there not bigger pintles and rod, your lawn mower may have found it for you !

HeyYou 04-10-2018 06:07 PM

My mower is fairly billy bad-arse. :D It could probably much up a small car without too much effort.

Michael92 04-10-2018 06:12 PM

Thats gnarly !! 🙈
Does it too have a Dodge v8? Haha fully built for... Street anddddd grass!

Well..... now that you mention it..... I DO have another 360 hangin' on the engine stand in the garage, the the little four cylinder that's in the tractor is getting a bit tired...... Wonder if I could adapt the governor to limit RPM on the 360. :D

Although, while mowing the grass may be a LOT more fun....... payin' for the gas it consumed at 3250 RPM wouldn't be.......

Michael92 04-10-2018 06:52 PM

Sounds like a welder and a bolt cut to size might just work 😉
and that'd would be ALOT of Gasolina.

On the other hand... This guy needs to figure out his truck haha he's prolly getting our messages in emails.

Off topic?? Us??? Oh no. That never happens here...... Ok. well... sometimes...... (ok, most of the time....)

99black 04-11-2018 02:24 PM

Bought a new iac and tps along with map sensor. Now I cant get the truck started. I can hear the fuel pump but without a gauge I wont be able to see exact pressure. I push the little nipple and fuel squirts out. Could it possibly be that? I just changed plugs, wires, cap, all throttle body sensors and still no fire now

Michael92 04-11-2018 02:41 PM

Getting spark too, rite? Your pump and fuel side should be fine, you confirmed pressure earlier?

You can try to take out your first 02 sensor and see if you got clogged cat like heyyou stated. Other then that I would test asd relay side of things.. if the pcm doesn't find the signal for it, the truck will not start after 3 seconds. On the other hand though, it shuts off all power to injectors and coil. So if you got spark, that may rule that out.

You could also spray starting fluid in the throttle body and see if it comes alive.
No check engine code?

99black 04-11-2018 06:55 PM

I am getting pressure. I tried swapping relays with another one under the fuse box and no go. Unfortunately the battery ran out of juice so had to take it out and put on the the charger. Could it be bad gas? Last time I filled it up was in early February as I only drive it when its a bad snow. After browsing forum things I looking at are fuel system clogged or bad sensor somewhere. I couldn't get the o2 sensor out so did soak in PB and will spray more later.

racefan41 04-11-2018 07:26 PM

on that O2 sensor, try going the tightening direction with it, then back to loosening. repeat a number of times. if you're hitting the wrench with a hammer it could move so little that you don't notice it but then it binds up again with the rusted threads. that back and forth with break some of that up i had to work mine back and forth like that for a while to get it out.

99black 04-11-2018 08:27 PM

Just brushed all ground and make sure they were clean. Could a bad battery be the cause? I just checked and its from 2011

HeyYou 04-12-2018 12:39 PM

Possible, but, if it holds a full charge, shouldn't really be a problem.

99black 04-12-2018 02:20 PM

How do you upload videos?

Ramman18 04-13-2018 01:09 AM

Post to youtube and share a link.

99black 04-13-2018 12:56 PM

hope this worked

99black 04-14-2018 02:29 PM

Anybody?

Ramman18 04-14-2018 02:50 PM

Dang, sounds like a cummins during a cold start video.

Do you smell gas after cranking awhile? If so, could be spark. You can see it's trying to fire so I think fuel or spark is the issue.

99black 04-14-2018 02:58 PM

I have a strong smell of gas

Ramman18 04-14-2018 03:00 PM

Have you checked the coil? Spark getting to all plugs? Pulled plugs? Checked cap and rotor?

99black 04-15-2018 01:39 PM

I replaced the coil but how to test if I got a bad one? Working on this solo now

HeyYou 04-15-2018 04:32 PM

Are you getting spark? Going to be hard to check that by yourself.......

Ramman18 04-15-2018 06:53 PM

If you can rig a plug and wire to touch something metal that you can see through the windshield in the gap under the hood when up that may work. That's how I bleed my power steering pump.

Stock coils don't generally go bad. Always heard about aftermarket ones leaving people stranded though. Put the old one on if it's still good and go from there.

99black 04-16-2018 08:11 AM

Does the crank sensor need to be perfectly set in? I bought a new one and having trouble getting it back in with the rubber piece.

true blue 04-16-2018 08:21 AM

It's pretty important, yes...proximity, that kinda thing.
