Default 4X4 Conversion

Hey everybody,

Ok I need your guys advice on this "project" I want to take on. Ok I have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 larmie slt club cab long bed 2 WEEL DRIVE. I didn't think I would need a 4x4. WRONG! We get alot of snow up here and i get stuck alot, plus i'd like to do some plowing, so i was wondering if it is even possible to make my truck 4wd. I know i need the front axle, drive shafts, transfer case, shift lever but is there anything else and where in the world would I find them. I know that the junkyard would charge $$$$ for the parts, so I was thinkin about finding an old one for parts and just strip her down. Trouble is there doesn't seem to be any of those lying around. If ya got any suggestions that would be great. Thanks!

In all honesty, you would be better off trading it on a 4wd. The swap really entails a LOT of work. Aside from what you mentioned (which is harder than it seems), you also have to re-work the steering. Yes, it IS possible to convert it. But it will take a lot of time, and probably more money than what you could pay for the difference on a 4wd model.

It's up to you though..it's your truck. Your best bet would be to find a parts truck (or one that's been in an accident) and strip it down...kinda like you were thinking. That way you'd have everything there. The same year would also be good.

Good Luck!

Then the day comes when you want to sell it and your 4x4 has a 2wd VIN...

If you figure in your time and money to do it, you may just as well sell the 2wd and buy a 2500 with the difference it would have took to do the conversion. Plus the 2500 is better suited for plowing.

or if you really like your truck now, you can find a 4x4 that been in an accident ( not really bad though) and take off your body and put it on that ones frame. then all you really need to do is cut a hole in the floor for the shifter. thats the easist way i see of doing it besides getting a new truck.

Its possible to do a 4wd conversion, and not as hard as you think. I converted my 2wd Cherokee to 4wd. If you can get the parts cheap, and have the time and tools...go for it.

The insurance company still thinks my cherokee is 2wd and a 4cyl
