Engine Paint

Please move if this isn't the right section (plan on adding pics to this when I do it). Ok guys so I'm bored and plan on pulling my 5.9 Magnum degreasing it and print it along with the transmission. Now I am going to power coat the following in Plum Crazy Purple valve covers, timing cover (doing the chain double roller cloyes), intake manifold (doing plenum repair with a homemade 1/4 CNC cut aluminum plate), PS bracket, accessory bracket, and harmonic balancer. Now I want your guys opinions what color should I paint the block and tranny to look good with Plum Crazy? I thought chrome but thought that would look to gody. I don't think black would look good (maybe?). Mind you the whole truck (engine bay included) is getting painted plum crazy. I just want to get everything ready before I pull it so I don't have to make 100 trips.
Thanks Austin

HeyYou 07-09-2018 03:55 PM

Actually, I think black would make a good contrast color. :)

I'll ldo that with a purple tranny. Now my only problem is the only engine Paint is "Plum Purple" I wonder if regular automotive paint will work... Powder coating won't work as the powder is ok back order

HeyYou 07-09-2018 04:02 PM

Nope, you need high-temp paint, or it will bake right off the first time you run it. :D

I have just basic walmart spray paint on my intake....its still there 500 miles later lol. Purple and black would look awesome, make sure to post some photos, please!

I'm going to get a quart of Plum Crazy Purple (Acrylic Enamel) spray the parts with a gun (after masking off machined surfaces) and then clear it (might go with an engine high temp clear or regular clear )

Now that was an interesting read. Sounds like a good plan to me.

I may not get the whole block painted in time taking a look at it (a lot of grease build up) as I have about a day and a half to get everything done.

HeyYou 07-09-2018 08:29 PM

Don't bother with it then. You just don't have enough time to prep, paint, and allow to cure.

I'm at least doing the parts listed I plan on pulling the engine for a 408 build and I'll paint the rest then

94Beater 07-10-2018 02:11 PM

Don't do black.
If you ever have any leaks, you will have difficult time finding where it's coming from against black color.

That is the only color I can think of that goes with Purple

HeyYou 07-10-2018 03:13 PM

White? :D

Would make leaks REAL easy to spot...... impossible to keep clean though.

Thought of that but yeah with me going off road that's a big no lol. Black was the factory color and that's going to be the theme of the truck. Black and plum crazy purple interior and plum crazy purple paint job

you can try pressure washing it before you remove it. i pressure washed and painted my engine while it was in my 81 and it came out pretty good. i used duplicolor engine enamel. it is very quick drying so i pretty much use it on everything now. if prepped right it usually sticks good. plus with a spray can you can kind of squeeze in places you can't fit with a spray gun. of course pulling the engine and getting paint everywhere would be a bit nicer but you can still get a pretty good result without.

What did you use to degrease it? Also I'm using a car paint on the engine as they don't make my color in engine paint

crazzywolfie 07-10-2018 11:11 PM

mainly pressure washer and soap. the pressure washer really doesn't have too hard of a time removing grease/debis on its own. it cans sometimes just be hard to get the right angle to get to everything while under the truck. what color are you wanting to paint the engine? duplicolor has a pretty good selection of colors as long as you don't want something too unique

Plum Crazy Purple with metal flake

crazzywolfie 07-11-2018 06:45 AM

other than the metal flake there is likely not too much of a difference between plum crazy purple and plum purple. i thought you were wanting to paint the engine different color than the valve covers and stuff.

Well if you bought a mopar from the early 70's with a hemi that was painted "in violet"(Plymouth name) or a Dodge with the same paint just a different name"plum crazy" i don't think it would clash at all. I would gladly make room in my garage for one!

This truck is going to be a throwback to that (his is going flat black). My 68 Charger is going back to the factory color B5 blue

MoparFanatic21 07-13-2018 12:39 AM

Just an update

Well I got everything off and it's drink innermost in the oven to burn all the water/chemical off. In the meantime I painted some brackets (black), the ignition coil (purple), bolts (purple), and am painting the wiper cowl (black or purple idk yet).https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...6ffbd38157.jpg

Also when I removed the plenum it was blown (see pics). The valley was full of oil (exactly 1 1/2 quarts). I got 2 gallons of paint (1 gallon in spray cans the rest in liquid for $180)https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...a4232f9fd5.jpg

Will started to paint the intake and accessory bracket today. Got the ignition coil back on after paint/cleaning it. Lost a but to the bolt that holds it in so I'm going to have to buy another one. If you look closely i got a little impatient and put it in while it was still wet, you can see where the bolt made an impression in the paint.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...9166204cf6.jpg

Yes. Engine block, valve covers, and water pump are going just black. Now I need to find a chrome ceramic coated headers as mine are all rusty now

MoparFanatic21 07-13-2018 06:38 PM

Well if you are following this thread, I hot more done. I got the frame primered and am now wiping down everything with my Homebrew degreaser, I mean wires, hoses, wire loom, everything.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...2de62ad1e9.jpg

HeyYou 07-14-2018 09:26 AM

Someone stole your water pump!!! :D

weazel 07-14-2018 12:44 PM

Wow it will look great when you are done. I don't know about painting that idler pulley. It is a sealed bearing in there but I'm not sure it will keep out the paint. You could get a new one in black for about $20.00 though.

I wouldn't worry about now being able to see oil leaks if it painted black, you can just add dye and use a blacklight flashlight to find the source. (amazon has them for about $5.00) I like to buy a bottle of that dye and use about 1/4 of it to check for leaks. (the whole bottle is overkill) I just run it for a while and check for leaks before an oil change. (then get that dye out of there)

I wanted to paint the bracket but wasn't taking the pulley off so I painted the whole thing. While I was at it painted the wiper cowl.

I painted them before with no problems I always take them off. I did because I was in a hurry used Acrylic Enamel and it isn't as durable as base coat clear coat (Acrylic Urethane) so I hope it holds up until I repaint it with base coat clear coat.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...47a54556ee.jpg

Did you use adhesion promoter on the cowl? I find its hard to get paint to stick to plastic without it.

Nope wiped it with acetone primered it and painted it

Timing Chain and more paint

Got the block painted black afterall. Looks pretty good. And primered the timing cover and waiting to shot it purple.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...75aebc88f3.jpg

Since I was in there I am replacing the timing chain with a Cloyes double roller. I must say that mine had A LOT of slack. I am surprised it ran and even more surprised it didn't jump time. I should get some better power and slightly better mileage (I hope :D)

MoparFanatic21 07-17-2018 12:45 AM

Well I road tested her tonight and I must say WOW! It has more power then it ever did. Fixing the plenum fixed my wild vent issue and it honestly woke up the motor! If anyone is interested in pictures of the parts installed and the purple wiper cowl let me know!

Damn man, looks great.

I painted the Honda parts tonight. Someone told me that metallic silver is the hardest paint color to get right. (it seemed hard to paint in fact) I painted a plastic bumper cover and fender and they turned out. (Certifit) Duplicolor and USC SprayMax 2k clear. That is the only clear I use. It will kill you if you inhale it. (disclaimer: I have no idea but I know it is really bad to inhale) Alabaster silver for the paint color.

The only thing it has to do with this thread is paint. The only thing it has to do with Dodge Rams is that I'm buying 2 rust free body panels with the money I will make. (the rest is in savings for a compressor) So we will get a passenger fender and a rear driver's door. Just need a drivers door and some repair to the bed to be complete. (the guy doesn't have one now)

I don't think we will be painting the intake and block. Nice work though MoparFanantic21. I think the chains can have tons of slack and not jump a tooth.

I have only sprayed with rattle cans so far. How good could it get if I actually got a real gun and a bigger compressor? This kids Honda will look really nice.

The hardest paint to paint is Plum Crazy Purple as it has tons of metal flake. To much and it says to little and you don't have enough metalic in it. Thanks for the compliments I think it looks really good what I did. Some was done with rattle cans others I used my guns. Painting is an art. I knew about the chain was exaggerating to get a point across lol. It was honestly really lose way out of spec
