Default Differential advice!

hey guys I have a 1998 ram 1500 (2wd, automatic, 5.9 l) I recently noticed a noice from my rear end during deceleration. It basically sounds like a skateboard wheel spinning lol. I’ve done some research and it sounds like I’m gonna be rebuilding the differential as the most likely culprit is pinion bearings. My question is; is there an effective additive I could use to quiet this sound and delay the rebuild? I plan to do a fluid change and new gasket on the cover since it appears to be leaking. Also, if this is not an option, would it possibly be better to simply replace the rear end with one from a junk yard? I’ve never done any rear end work besides simple fluid changes and stuff and I’ll admit I am intimidated by the chore.

You could try putting some thicker gear oil like 85w140 in there.

At a minimum, make sure that the diff stays full of gear oil. Running it low invites the issues you describe. In addition to the cover, check the wheel seals and pinion seal for leaks.
