New to the forum but I'm trying to help those out there that want to do a sweat swap but don't think that it'll work. I was looking around for a while and never got a straight forward answer to wether or not the 4th gen seats would work in a 2nd gen. The big answer is yes they do. You'll have to do a little bit of fab work but its doable. I love the seats so much its been an amazing upgrade, the center console that comes with a cupholder is a big plus to eliminate the cupholder that horrible cupholder design that came with the 98-01 models.
one drawback is that the seats don't scoot up as much as the 2nd gen ones, but that isn't much of a problem for me, I only use the back seats for gear or for my four legged monsters. but they'll find a way back there without much collateral damage haha. alright here we go. again sorry if its not to your liking! first time that I actually tried writing up a how to.
Things you'll need
18mm socket
21mm or 19mm
15mm
welder
angle grinder (or some sort of cut off wheel)
and a 7mm wrench
So here we go, you'll first have to start by taking out the old second gen seats out for this you'll need a 15mm and 18mm. Once you take them off go ahead and bring out that 19mm or 21mm ( I forgot which size it was sorry guys) on the sides of the bracket there are a few bolts I believe there is 3..two on one side and one on the other. Once you manage to take off those bolts near the front go the seat there are I believe (6?) little 7mm bolts you'll have to wrench due to limited space. once you take those off you'll have the brackets off the rails in the seats.
2.) once you get that done throw the seat to the side you won't need it anymore, Go ahead and get the 4th get seat and there are 4 bolt up location on the bracket you'll have to cut them off so the seat and the real are the only thing left on there. It's not hard it was actually pretty simple to cut it off came off easier than expected.
3.) So you got the brackets off the 2nd gen and you got the 4th gen seats cut off the brackets ( a bit confusing but makes sense to me!) so what you do when you have that done, go ahead and secure the 2nd gen brackets back on the truck and throw the 4th gen seat on top try to level the seat as much as you can mine ended up perfectly aligned and balanced on the brackets, once you got that figured out go ahead and tack weld it on there in 4 diff locations to secure it. check it out and if its to your liking go ahead and take the sucker off the truck and go ahead and finish the welding process.
4.) the driver and passenger seats are completely identical in the procedure so no headaches there. Once you have it all figured it and welded go ahead and throw then onto the truck and see how she feels. you'll like them.
5.) Centre console.
the center console should fit on the old bracket holes for the old center console... Only thing is the front of the 4th gen console is slightly longer so to fix that go ahead and rig up some small extension that'll hold the bolt there.
Good thread about who wants to install a 4th gen center console Into 2nd gen.
I'm in the process of putting the entire interior from a 4th gen into 3rd gen, it can be done.. just takes a little extra work.
Here is how I do this https://cararac.com/blog/can-you-ins...d-gen-ram.html
