Default horn pad

ok, got a problem...my horn only works sometimes. i tried doing a search, but all i found was things about changing to air horns & alarm horn beeps, etc. im just wondering if there is a common problem that may frequently occur with the horn. little info...99 ram 1500 quad cab, 5.9L. when the horn does work, you really have to push down on the center of the steering wheel. but then sometimes it just doesnt work at all. we checked the fuses & relay, and everything checks out ok. we used a power probe and made sure that the horns themselves werent bad, and they checked ok. checked the wiring under the distribution block and everything was good and tight. only thing i havent checked was under the horn pad. but i cant figure out how to take it off. i dont want the air bag to suddenly go off while im trying to get the horn pad off. plus i dont want to break anything by just pulling on the pad itself. is there a trick? is there something that i would need to remove 1st? i need to get my truck past state inspection to get regular tags, so someone please help???!!!!

I have the same problem. I finally got it to work when it was inspected but now I can't get it to work at all. The inspection garage said I needed to replace the air bag module at $895!!!!!

Anybody run into the same problem? What are my options? Thanks

I have a hard horn, too. I assumed that it was driver error ... pushing in the wrong place. The wheel has two horn pix on it (right and left of center). I found that pushing on one of THOSE (with my thumb) blows the horn very easily. Pushing in the center doesn't work well at all.

i hear ya i have exactly the same problem, what i did was buy some airhorns hook them up ran the wire to the overhead console and mounted a ford power window switch that i got at the surplus store so i goes off automatically sounds awesome but i dunno if that would pass a safety or not, i plan on running my truck into the ground so i don't need another saftey
