Basically, its just a thermostatic controlled valve. (purely mechanical in nature) that bypasses the cooler until a specific temp is reached. It allows the trans to warm up faster, and STAY warm in really cold weather.

It allows transmission fluid flow through the cooler when it's warm enough. Basically thermostatic valve. Factory on later model Rams, 4th gen I think.
