Default Electronic Project (small, little help needed)

OK, so here's what I got:

'97 Ram 1500 - Infinity system, cassette head unit with CD changer controls...

So originally I was thinking a CD changer for now, maybe a new head unit later...
But then I thought...why a CD changer? Ran out an got an MP3 player, and I'm currently using a cassette adapter to play it through...But...a CD changer can be hooked up to my factory unit...Sooooooo, why not tap into it and connect an 1/8" stereo jack and play it that way, Will this work?? Just wondering if I got the cable for H.U to Changer and tapped in the left and right inputs or if I knew the which pins or etc. then theoritically [sp] this should work, shouldn't it?
Anyone ever try this? or know if it will work or not? or know which pins are for what, etc.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Bdogg

Sounds like it would in theory. I don't see why it wouldn't. Worth a shot in my opinion!

lemme get this right.... what your thinkin bout doing is taking out the stock radio...fiding the wires for the front and rear speakers...that lead to the factorydeck... taping into them and wiring them to a headfone jaack...say a project type one from radioshack? and hopeing that the sound would travel out of the ipods headfone jack into the wiring of the truck for the speakers...esentially turning your truck into external speakers for your ipod... kinda like what headfones do ..but instead of headfone speakers..they would be your truck speakers.... well if this is what your thinkginb... yea it would work... but the sound wouldnt be what your looking for...even with the infinity (stock) amp. (if you have it but i dont think you do seeing your factory deck is only a tap deck).. mainly b/c you would have to shut off your factory deck so the two sources of music dont step on eachother at the point of the speaker...even if you turned your factory deck all the way down.. the sound quality would be poor... and i think if you have the internal amp..it still wouldnt amp the source loud enough .... i could be complelety wrong... but it just doesnt seem to add up.... ive actually tried this before when i first started installing car steroes and i was broke as a joke..my old POS chevy truck didnt have a cd player...but i took an old "boombox" out of the barn from work that was pretty tore up but still play music..took it apart and pretty much took the leads off of the speakers on the boombox and wired them into like 4 speakers i aquired... didnt work to well... still layed music...if you really want to utilize your ipod.. get a nice aftermarket deck...almost all newer decks sold on the market have inputs disgned for external sources..either for changers and stuff like that or even one specificall desighed to interface with your ipod and the deck and built in controls for the ipod and you control it from the deck itself..esentially plug and forget system... its worth a shot...hell if it dont work all you gotta do is tape up some splices in the factor harness... let us know!

Hi Shot,
Lemme try to explain a little better

It is an Infinity system, with CD changer controls. There is a female DIN plug (8 Pin) in the back of the deck where you would plug a factory CD changer in, If someones has a diagram that would show what each pin is for I will then be able to tap into the Left and Right Channel Inputs not speaker leads, that would not work since those are Outputs. Basically I would use the CD Changer left and right inputs to run through, which should work.

Anyone know what the different pins are?

oh crap...yea that makes alot more sense now!!!! uhh..... yea should work..essentially the same thing...hell..if you ripped apart the lead off the changer and hotwired a small speaker to it yea... youd get sound.... ****...try it.! no diagrams here.. do it the old fashoned way... pin to pin shootin!!! its always fun

Haynes is no help, as well as Mitchell On Demand. All I found on there was the diagrams for radio to speakers, power, ground, stuff like that. There was nothing about the CD changers or the pins on the back [&:] I can post that diagram if you want.

I'd suggest checking AllData, but you gotta pay for it and I don't have a membership [&:] I think some people on here do and if your really nice they might check for you!
