How do you get the torque convertor out?
Trying to rebuild this 46RE outta a 97' Ram.
But the torque convertor wont come out? It slides in/out about 1/2in, and it'll tilt side to side 1/4in? The rebuild manual I have just says to slide it out, and with the few transmissions I've done, it just slides out?
But this one posotively wont.
Am I missing something? I hope its something simple. Could it being cold be the problem? Its 40*F out right now, so I just brought it into the house...

welcome to DF...
do a search for the "merry christmas" thread, there is a link to a 2001 manual if you dont already have one. I'd download it and see what they have to say about it.
Also, since your in the middle of a rebuild... I highly recommend you visit this website http://www.apsprecision.com/ and look into the fixes that they have for the 46RE tranny. For a few hundred more you can get a much improved tranny that will be far more dependable than the stock setup.
if you havent done it already... get a bigger tranny cooler...

I've got all the parts already. Nothing is bottom of-the line stuff, the guy who owns the local trans shop also owns the local NAPA, and I gave him $1200 last year to rebuild a Chevy trans. So they've been really helpful, I'm surprised.
From them I got a ATSG trans rebuild manual.
I've also got a Haynes manual for it.
And now I'm downloading that one in the Merry christmas thread.
But so far, everything says to just slide it out.
A search of the web turned up 2 post about stuck TC, both mentioned it being the pump bushing being seized on the TC, but neither mentioned how to remove it. I'm gonna stop by the trans shop in about 2 hours and see what they say.
Edited to add, if this was a vehicle I needed, I'd have it done. But the 97' Ram "Sport" 1500 360 with 100,000 on it was given to me. So I'm tryin it myself.

Well, crowbar and hammer is what the guy at the trans shop said! He said yeah, the pump bushing is seized on the TC
Only I took it more gentle, I used 2 hickory hammer handles behind it, sat on the transmission (to keep it from moving, and it was easier to pry from back there). Then I just beat on the hammer handles with my palm. Bout 5min later, it came out, bushing still on the TC, were it aint supposed to be.
For anyone else with the same problem as this later, its hard to get out when this happens because 1 of three things must happen before it will come out. Either the bushing must come free from the TC, the seal must come loose from the pump, or finally, the seal must kinda turn 'inside out' for lack of better description. In my case, the seal turned 'inside out', the spring from the seal is now layin back in the pump, instead of were it should be. Dont matter though, pump gotta be replaced anyway, it was the cause of the rest of it going out.

Yeah...usually they fall right out, and the trick is to keep them in there. I've never heard of one refusing to come out.
Sometimes you have to tip the transmission on end to get them out. [>:]

Yeah, I tried for probably 4 hours total trying diffrent stuff before I talked to the trans shop. Turning it and pulling, turning and pulling, prying, I even tried a slide hammer. But I didnt expect to need to pry it out like they said, and thats what worked. For awhile there I was even trying to 'crack a safe' 32 to the right, 48 to the left, 56 to the right, 25 to left. But even that didnt work. (Note, thats not the combination to my safe)

But I didn't hit OK. Instead I went outside to bring my plow truck in to defrost...and I ended up breaking the reverse band. [:'(] So now I either need a rebuilt 727 or a new plow for my V10. [>:]Glad you got it out though.
