Default Temperature sensor

Hello all again. I love this site so far and everyone is helpful. I have another question regarding my truck.
Its a 96 1500 360 4x4 auto. A while back i got a whole new motor replaced and mildly built. But the thing is that the motor was out of a 2001. When i got the truck back the temp gauge no longer works in the dash. He said he wasnt able to use the same plug thats coming off of my 96 truck. Does this make sense? How can i get my gauge going again and where is sensor located ??

Thanks all

Need the intake off of a 96 truck and swap them. 96 had 2 temp sensors, one for the gauge one for the computer. In 98 then went to just one temp sensor for both

I know there was a change from 2 sensors to one but I was thinking the change happened in 96 when they went from OBDI to OBDII?

Nope, 96 and 97 both had the two sensors, even since early 98s. 99 was a for sure year of the 1 sensor and major electrical updates with new modules and all
