Default 9.25 rearend - welded plug?

So I recently suffered the dreaded LSD clip failure on my 98 1500 5.2 w/ the 9.25" limited slip rear-end. I'm not in a position to be able to afford the Eaton true trac & honestly, I don't really need LS. So, I swapped in an open differential and replaced all the bearings. I was just looking at it and noticed what appeared to be a pinhole in a weld that was filling a hole. When I hit it with a wire brush, the weld was super thin and opened up a cavity that's about 1/2" deep. My question is: Does anybody know what this is? Possibly how they weld the axle tube to the pumpkin? It appears that the inside has more fill weld in it, doesn't appear to be oily, so I'm assuming it doesn't go through? Is it safe to just fill it with RTV and pretend I never saw this? Thank you in advance - L8braker

Exactly. But there looks like you had some insect build a nest there. The outer section looks fibrous so it's not slag.
