Default Help needed regarding a mysterious part

I'm attempting to help my french speaking son in law. He removed the transfert case on his 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9L with transfer case NV241HD. He wound up finding a mysterious part which he is attempting to identify. If anybody could help him out, it would be much appreciated! Thank you

If it's metal (looks like RTV) and came out of the transfer case that case more than likely needs a rebuild.
