Default Check engine light on a dakota

I posted on the dakota forum but no response. My mom's 99 dakota has the check engine light on. How do we go about checking the codes. I tried turning the key on and off 2 times and 3 times but may have the order off. Also where can I find a list of the codes for the dakota or are they the same as the ram. Thanks.

do the key thing... key on-off-on-off-on and the codes should appear on the odometer
it'll say p-done when all the codes have been displayed.
