how would you clean the throttle body?

You can use a carburator cleaner and just follow the instructions given there. Pretty much spray really good then turn on and accelerate to 2000RPMs for 30 seconds.

Or you can take it off and clean it, but the spray thing worked pretty good for me, I did it twice and it got pretty clean.

Take it off...remove the sensors....use carb cleaner on it, until it's clean...put everything back together.

I have a problem with too much carb cleaner going into my motor

Agreed, always remove it to clean it. In addition to all that carb cleaner going into your motor, you have all the gunk that comes off of the throttle body with it. You definetly don't want to be washing that into your plenum.
