Default Empty catalytic converter

So I've had my truck for over a year now and just got a P0420 like a month ago. Got a buddy and some beers and decided to chop it off and see if I couldn't just gut it, but when I got it off the ****er was empty. Why did I just get the code now and will there be any issues if I don't replace it?

The sensor may need a non fouler but no the code doesn't affect ATF ratio that's the front one. So you could leave it

I had the same code when I deleted my cat, mine was plugged up solid. I welded up a straight pipe 3in delete pipe (I even cut out and weld in the old O2 sensor bung). I got two Dorman 42009 Spark Plug Non-Foulers (they will thread into the O2 bung) and some stainless wool, no more code.
