Absolutely. One of my time consuming jobs is cleaning out the tube before reassembly. I also have a thin piece of nylon that I can slide to the seal and slide the axle in without touching the tube. Let yawl know how it goes!! Thank you again!!

I bought the spreader to prepare rebuilding my 2500 axles as it got old getting it in and out without one lol. Never knew how they worked as it was one a buddies truck and he sold it about two weeks after it, but it ran with no noise.
I agree to this method. This was the method we would use on Naval ships on many many bearing to shaft applications. Especially with an interference fit!!

I would like to shoot the engineer that thought the current design was better..... Replacing a ten dollar part went from a 100 dollar job, to a 1000 dollar job..... That's just farking stupid. Personally, I think they should make engineers work on the stuff they will be designing for a minimum of three years before they are allowed to design anything at all.
Couldn't agree more! I believe why they changed it is if the u joint or bearing wears it will cause the axle shaft to wobble damaging the seal. It can still do it but it's not at the end of the shaft where all the movement is. And it will cost less to fill it with gear lube because it doesn't get spread out into the axle tubes. Actually if you think about it it's better if you keep the lube where it's needed rather than in the tube.

No luck with the ratchet strap. Have broken two already. I have a larger one that I have to bend the hook a little to get it off the strap as it won't fit behind the gears. Hoping I can put the hook back on and bend it back down on the strap and try again. Also been applying heat to it also. If it don't come out today, I'll be searching for a spreader tomorrow. I asked a couple of auto part stores if they had a loaner spreader and they all replied " what is a differential spreader ? " so no help there. Did I mention how much fun I'm Having? Thanks guys!

Yeah, bearing caps are off. I stuck em back on and left em loose after the first ratchet strap broke. Didn't want it to fly out and hit my head. Might have damaged the gears. Sorry. Maybe the angle I'm pulling at is messing me up. This is the second strap before it broke.

That might be a little too steep. I remember my strap was a little more straight. Let me figure out another way and get back to you

Thanks. I ordered a cheap spreader, probably be a few days before I get though. Since everything on the front of the truck has been removed, I've been trying to brace a pipe to achieve a lower more straight on angle. I just don't want to get into the a/c condenser. If I could weld worth a crap, I was thinking about putting the damaged bumper back on grinding off the chrome and welding the pipe to that and let it go to the floor. I would definitely get a straight angle and if the weld breaks the top of the pipe would at least go away from the condenser. Any other ideas are appreciated though. Thanks again.
