Possibly a grounding issue. Power is finding a different path to ground through other circuits. The are grounds under the dash, on the firewall, on the fender by the battery, and on the engine.

just out of curiosity, are there normally long jumper wires in the drivers fus box in the cab?

im tempted to cut one wire that appears to be hardwired from hot

I don't believe there are. Pictures would help.
