Default 3.9 V-6 smoking

I have a Dodge Ram 3.9 V-6 WITH 185,800 MILES. I had it in the woods tonight and after about 2 hours I stoped and noticed smoke from tail pipe I thought it might have been steam cause it was a little cool I revved it around 2,500 rpm and it looked like I was power braking. I got back on highway and drove around 60 for 5 miles and stoped. I could not see any smoke. I am not much of a mechanic but when I drive it slow for that long the rings must load up and the burn oil bad at idle. I have normal oil pressure. I quess I need to do a compression check to see if I have a bad ring. If so should I run it till it gets real bad then dump in a bottle of "no smoke" and trade it in or replace the rings????
