94' 4x4 Rear End Repair/Replace questions
Most likely, the rear axle is a 9.25". Should be 5 lug wheels. 3.55 gearing is the most common, unless its an SST or an ORE, which would likely use 3.92 gears for better off the line acceleration. I just sold a complete '96 9.25 3.92 rear axle with limited slip locally that was in great shape.
Unless he finds a good deal on another ride and can flip this beast.
Since this rear axle was complete with brakes/drums, had limited slip and 3.92 gearing, it sold for $500 here in central VA. You can try to find one at salvage yards in your general area via car-part.com - or try your local Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc.
The biggest issue with '00+ will likely be parking brake cables. You can swap backing plates but that is still not as straightforward as it sounds.
OP, if you really care (and you don't need to at this point), I detailed all the differences I came across here. I went the other way, putting a good '96 rear into a 2000

You can also see some tube erosion in the thread above.
Starting around post #15 here I show some more tube damage and my shop-brew flip kit (again, there's not much reason for you to care right now)
