Has any maintenance been done to this truck over the years as you know of? If so, what has been done already?

Also, if you are smelling gas, there is likely a leak somewhere. Start the truck and closely inspect the fuel lines while the truck is running. You might also want to check to determine what the fuel pressure is at the injectors, as there should be a port on the fuel rail to connect a fuel pressure test gauge.

Open the hood with the truck idling. Do you still smell fuel? Where do you smell it? In front under the hood or in back by the exhaust. If you smell it under the hood, you have a leak. If it smells like it's coming out the exhaust, you're running rich. Has your fuel mileage gone down lately?

I can think of plenty of things that would draw power down but the fuel smell is the biggest clue.
