Default question about a "tight" shifter on '00 Ram

hello - ok - i went and test drove a 2000 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Sport, with the 360 v8 & auto trans. one of my concerns with this truck, is that the shifter was very "stiff". it was difficult to shift from park, and while shifting from park into another gear (any gear), i couldn't feel any "groove" that the shifter would rest in for each gear. Question - is this the sign of a problem, or is this the sign of a newly rebuilt trans? It feels as if the shifter is tight in the steering column, but it could be in the trans, i suppose. ANY help or add'l info is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

most shift "positions" are part of the shift mechanism, not really part of what you feel in the tranny holding the shifter....

it shifted fine (1st to 2nd, downshifting, etc), it was just difficult shifting between gears.

I think the other guy got it right with his diagnosis. It is probably needing adjustment in the shiftlinkage. Check to see that there are no binding spots or bent linkages too... However, to an extent, what you feel will be in the collumn. It is possible that is is rusted or damaged, but I would not check that first. And if the tranny shifts fine, it shouldn't be too much of a problem... Also, some new shifters use a cable, not a solid linkage. Check to make sure it is lubed and free of all bindings if that Is what you have.

or got got something bidning the linkage...happend to me after a night of wheelin in the dark on state land.. (ssshhh dont tell anyone) ran over a small sapling goin 40... some of the branches got jammed on boths sides of the tranny and the frame/body it shiffted wierd for a day and did the -day after wheelin- rutine checkup and found a fricken forest growin under the truck.. yanked out all that i could and it was much better... although i cant see soemthig being jamed in there and cuasing you to exert that much force to shift it.. worth a shot
