Another 46RE question
There seems to be a lot of questions to this transmission. So here is another one. It's been doing pretty good so far but I have seemed to notice when you first start a run when its cold. It seems to slip a little from second to third gear but once it warms up ( maybe 6 to 8 blocks) this goes away and it shifts ok. Meaning the longer you drive it shifts normal and smooth. My guess would be the band but not sure? 1st through n3rd shifts around 2,000 to 2,500 then drops down to around 1,500 or lower after that. Fluid is fine and was changed recently after replacing some parts in the valve body ( Kit). Nothing was in the pan and the magnet was clean. Its a 99 with abound 164,000 miles on it. I'm sure down the road it will need to be rebuilt but for now I just want to take care of it as much as possible. I'm just not sure if there is something that can be done to make it shift better cold or something I will have to baby till I get the cash up for a rebuild? Thanks
So on the 46re transmission fluid DOES NOT flow in park…..which is why you check fluid level in neutral… well when I drive mine, I put into neutral for 15 to 20 seconds then to drive and take off, this way the fluid cycles through. If you start and take off from park the fluid hasn’t filled “the loop” so your starving the tranny of fluid for the first few seconds if you just take off from park. Now your truck has 160k, think of how many times the tranny was starved for that first few seconds….always put in neutral for at least 15 seconds before you take off….I also change my fluid and filter EVERY 10k miles, cheap insurance to a known weak trans.
did this with my 95 ram, had 245k on it when I traded, trans was rebuilt at 140k (before I bought) and I never had an issue with transmission and I beat the hell out of it off roading
my 02 has 167k original trans, fluid is perfectly red 8000 miles into this fluid, and I have no issues
