Spare tire winch cable fails
I was performing an unnatural act and got caught.While cleaning the garage I was throwing away old broken no longer need parts, in some cases to the devil knows what.
Found a broken spare tire winch for a 2nd gen Ram or maybe my long gone S10. I believe that precipitated all the trouble and put evil magic in the air.
Next, while in the field the cable in my 2500 breaks and deposits the spare where I can find it. Note, the truck brake lines all got replaced with SS, but that was a safety issue. And the OEM were known to be garbage. The prices for those winches run from $34 to $134, and considering the age of the truck and me why would I go OEM, and not cheap out.
Would used OEM from a non salt state be better?

Note, the truck is driven less than 500 miles a month. Just turned 80 k miles, a 5.9 v8 reg cab lb gas hog only used for work stuff.

When I purchased my truck used several years ago, I was driving it back home while a friend was following behind in his car. As I was getting off the major interstate highway, I saw my friend's car swerve in my rearview mirror. When I got home, I asked him what was going on that caused him to swerve and he stated that he dodged a tire coming at him. I looked up under the rear of my newly purchased truck and noticed that the spare tire was no longer under the truck. We went back up to the exit off the interstate and found the spare tire & wheel sitting beside a guardrail.
In my case, the steel flat portion of the spare tire winch had folded over due to rust and allowed for the spare tires ejection. I replaced the spare tire winch with another one from a used truck and all has been fine to-date, however, I do plan to run a couple of cables under the spare tire in an 'X' pattern and attach them to the frame (kinda like a trailer set of safety chains) to "catch" the spare tire in case the spare tire winch ever let's go again.

As long as the frame where it mounts is solid, sure. I always like to extend a cable as far as possible when I get a truck and grease it. Then run it back up with the sprare on it. I tried that on my current '96 Ram 1500 so I could put the spare up under the bed. Then I found out why it was in the bed. The previous owner put Flowmaster 44's on the truck and they block where the spare tire goes.
