Default 5.9 magnum stalling and surging

Hello, I have a 2002 Ram 2500 V8 (5.9) with199,720 miles, and for the last few weeks my truck has occasionally been surging in rpms for about a second while driving, sometimes sputter and jerk when taking off at a red light, and has died while idling at a red light. I was wondering if anyone can help guide me to fix that problem. I dont know if this is related but i have also noticed my gas milage has gone down a bit

Is the check engine light on? If so, any pending or stored codes when hooking up a OBD2 scanner to the truck?

Has the Idle Air Controller (IAC) been pulled from the rear of the throttle body, so that the rear portion in the throttle body (where the IAC piston sits) can be thoroughly cleaned?

I will check any codes but the light is not on and I have not cleaned the IAC

Cleaning the area on the back of the throttle body where the IAC sits is a good 1st step to curing your issue and is a great place to start. There are several YouTube videos available that shows how to perform the cleaning.

I forgot to respond last night but I pulled the IAC off and it was super dirty and had lots of stuff on it. I believe that is what’s causing the problem. Thank you!
