ram vs. silverado? who should win...
Hey i have a 94 ram with a 5.9 and i wanted to know should my truck be way faster then a 5.3 silverado..i race my friend all the time and his is faster at times is something wrong with my truck? i have a magnaflow with turndown probly 2.75 inch piping with a full on k&n intake and he has a drop in k&n with proobly 2.75 inch piping to a flowmaster 70 series and a turndown should my truck be faster or about the same as his? My dad has a silverado and the 5.3 is fast as **** for a stock truck but there should be no competition i would think between a 5.9 and 5.3...
The 5.3 Vortec actually has more horsepower and almost the same amount of torque (10 less IIRC) than the 360 (5.9). IIRC, the 2nd gen Ram is also heavier than the 98+ Silverados.
You haven't really given us much info about the trucks involved. Years? 2wd? 4wd? Auto? Manual? Reg Cab? Ext. Cab? Crew Cab? Shortbox? Longbox? All those factor in, especially when it comes to weight. Gear ratio also has a hand in it all.

well my truck is a regular cab shortbox 94 ram 1500 with the 5.9 like i said its 2 wheeldrive with an auto tranny only performance modds are a magnaflow exhaust with k&n full intake and i just got a remanufactured enggine put in about 3 months ago it still needs some work i really dont think its running like it should i think im going to get new spark plugs and jba sparkplug wires soon will that make a difference in power? my friends silverdao is a 2001 5.3 extended cab z71 it has f wheeldrive with the shortbox and really with 4 wheel drive on his i think that should slow him down i think my truck not running to its full potential.... the silverados are ****ing quick though i know that my dads just has a drop in K&n and i havent been beat by any trucks or suvs only a couple cars have beat me in it.....chevy does get more power out of their engines

yeah u better get a new cat those are no good. The other day I got a letter concerning the cat that they would replace it for free no charge on parts an labor, Thankfuly i got mine replcaed bout 6mo. ago cuz I was complaning bout rattling so they replaced it. I could tell that there was a little bit of increae in power n the 40 series flowmaster sounded much better,so take it to your local dealership and have them check it out usually you can tell cuz there will be rattling coming from the underneath the truck.
You need to find out what gears you have? Gears are such an important thing...As for your engine...I don't trust remanufactured parts. You might have been hosed.[&:]
Well my 95 318 short bed 5 speed is a pretty quick little sucker. The engine is a stock one but i put a new transmission in it, but I have no clue what gears are in it. Does anyone know what gears it may have in it? Its a stock transmission(well re-manufactured).

I hate to say this because I love my dodge ram but the 5.3 motors are strong! Even the 4.8's run good. The problem here is you have a V8 which it's basic design goes back 30+ years. The LS motors are relatively new and GM put alot of development into those motors. They were typically underrated in the Vettes and and fbodies when they first came out. IE a friend of mine had a 01 Z28 which was supposed to make 305 HP on the flywheel. With the 6 speed tranny and the fact that the motor only had 800 miles on it we didn't expect it to dyno more than 275 rwhp. Well, it surprized the crap outta us. Made 300 even with the stock airfilter in it meaning it was making closer to 350 on the crank. Put a filter on it and lid and made 320. Put on a catback with a ypipe and made 346. I know of alot of those guys that had that happen. With that past history I would expect nothing less in the case of the 5.3 if you were in a racing situation. You also might have a mechanical problem too though. Most of the Gm trucks have 3.73's if they are 4x4 and you are probiably sporting 3.55's.
u also gotta remember the 360's have been around ALOT longer.. so they havent been changed much.. the 5.3 is a relativley newer motor with better engineered parts in it to produce them kinda results... dont get me wrong...the 5.9l is a awesome motor...its a downright tq machine... but a regular magnum motor like ours wasnt built to race... alot of mods have to be done in order to drag that motor with nice results... between the 360's they put in the older muscle cars and the newer magnums..the difference isnt much.. not including the pcm managment and the FI
