Default starting problem

Ok, sometimes when I try to start my truck all I get is a "clicking" noise. Some time's it takes 5 minutes before the turnover. I have one guy saying it's just a loose wire (didn't what) and another telling me I neeed a new starter all together. The wires I checked for being loose was the batter cables, and the cable that runs from the + to the starter. I want to know, cuz the starter I'm told could be around $130.

Anyone know what the deal is???

Truck specs: 1995 Ram 1500 V8 5.9L

Could be a bad connection. Have you checked the connections at the starter and the battery? If they're good (not corroded or loose), then I'd say it's the starter solenoid. If it's the solenoid, you're better off just replacing the whole starter.

u might have strong connections...meaning the bolts are tight and or the wires arnt loose...doesnt mean you got a good connection... try taking off the wires you checked and hitting them and the terminals with a wire brush...lightley.... if rust can get into small threads on a bolt...then it DEFEANTLY can get into small connecting/mating surfaces for electrical stuff... also..its REALLY good to put some dio-electric grease on all electrical fittings... same stuff you can get at autozone for the sparkplug boots... its a conductive anti corrosive grease made specially for electrical fittings .. and batterys..

I just went threw the samething. I changed the pos cable, cleaned the neg terminal ( looked fine ), still had the problem. I took the starter off and had it tested, it was bad. replaced it with THE cheap starter - $130 and still had the problem. In the end, it turned out to be the neg terminal, don't just judge it by looks. I would try them first.
