Default 46RH OD Output Shaft Removal Question

I’m in the process of inspecting my overdrive unit on my 46RH. Over the last few months it was a little clunky going into drive and reverse, and then reverse began to slip just slightly before engaging. I checked the transmission pan and found what looks to be a portion of a wavy snap ring. It looks smaller in diameter than the direct clutch snap ring which holds the hub in place, which is often broken. Mine still looks intact.

So I’m at that dreaded point of shop, pressing the drum and getting the snap ring removed. I have removed the front bearing and governor assembly from the output shaft, but can the shaft itself be removed externally or is it held in place by the hub internals?

I don’t have a press so I ordered this tool off of Amazon which is sort of an all in one and it is designed, I thought, to be able to remove this snap-ring holding the drum together, but it won’t because the output shaft protrudes down the bottom and prevents the hub from sitting in the tool properly.

It seems like in most videos people have the forward shaft removed prior to “disarming the bomb”, though it may be that it’s sticking through their press, so you can’t see it in the videos.

I haven’t found a video that shows a person actually placing the drum in the press prior to using the special tool to compress it and then removing the snap ring. It always starts with the drum already in the press and then them showing the compression and the removal of the ring, with the forward shaft not visible.

The tool that I bought doesn’t have space or any ability to compress the drum if the forward shaft is still in place. It looks like the hub is meant to be sitting on the bottom of the tool (without the output shaft) and then the compressing part goes on top of it, pressing down on the Sun gear.

Can anyone confirm whether it’s possible to remove the output shaft prior to taking the direct clutch snap ring out? If so I could be done. If not I’ll need a press.

I hope this makes sense. I’ve spent so much time on this and have done everything carefully and slowly and now I’m at the point where I just wanna be done (it’s cold and rainy here in the PNW).

The manual kind of jumps around when it comes to transmissions and overdrive so it’s like a lot to flip through pages trying to find one specific step that may be in the overdrive section maybe in the transmission section. It basically has you remove the gov assembly and front bearing then throwing the the hub in the press.

It’s just hard to find clear information so hopefully it someone here has been through this and can point me in the right direction. I’d really appreciate that. Thanks!

Here is a video to remove the od snap ring. The od hub should come off the splined shaft.
Here is a exploded view of how it's put together.
