If the timing chain hasn't ever been changed, it would be good to install a new double roller timing chain and gears to help restore the engine's timing. Changing the water pump & bypass hose/clamps would also be a good thing to do as well. Also, check down the intake to see if the plenum gasket is blown and allowing oil to pool inside of the bottom of the intake manifold. Lastly, a good tune-up consisting of changing the air filter, thorough cleaning of the throttle body + replacing the throttle body gasket, new copper spark plugs, spark plug wires and distributor cap & rotor (with brass inserts/contacts for long life). 5.9 magnum engines are pretty stout with just a bit of reasonable maintenance.

May want to check you have good power(12V) to the trans. Preventative maintenance is key! You are not in the rust belt but wouldn't hurt to inspect the metal brake lines for rust. They can burst! Was a fuel pump ever done? I replaced mine at around 200K. Inspect your belt tentioner and idler pulleys, Tentioners stick and bearings go bad in the pulleys. Is this a 4WD? Front end components you definitely want to inspect.

Lastly, download a copy of the factory service manual for your year truck via this link - https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...e-manuals.html

This comes in handy when troubleshooting issues and walks you through how to do many maintenance repairs on your truck.
