Hello I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 club cab 4x4 5 speed with a 5.2 magnum engine and I believe it came factory without a tow package, I have no plug under the dash for the trailer brake install, no 4 pin or 5,6 or 7 pin plug or even wires in the rear for a trailer and the fuse location under the hood is there for fuse and relay but no wires coming up from the bottom of the distribution fuse box, i was doing some research and found that in that year the factory didnt install that option on another of there dodge ram ... So I'm curious as to how I would hook a 7 pin blade type plug up to my existing wiring harness so I can get lights, blinker, brakes etc to a trailer? Is my only option is to splice into the rear harness and just wire it up that way and make it work or what? Anyone with any ideas or have had this issue please let me know or maybe even the rear light color wiring diagram wold be great too Thanks alot

The lights you can tap into the harness. If you are using a trailer with brakes you will need to tap into the cab harness at the brake switch for a controller then run a wire back to the trailer plug.

My 2001 2500 Work Truck was ordered by a local government without the tow package but they added the hitch and wiring for 4 pin, 7 pin and 7 pin Ag, all tapped into the rear lights wiring (government work program ?). It did not have a trailer brake or 12V power so I added that. In my truck the wiring for the trailer brake was present in the cab and ran down to the connector under the cab, but no wiring after the connector for the brake or 12V. Have a look at that connector if there are less wires on the side going to the back, if so it's much less work as you can just extend the brake and 12V wiring from there.

yea my 96 doesn't even have the trailer brake controller plug under the dash on drivers side. I have not checked the wires just under the cab, haven't thought about doing that yet. I'm thinking I'm just gonna have to wire my plug and trailer brakes controller all from scratch which is a bummer because it's a slow process and everything has to be 100% correct or can cause unneeded issues else where...
