Engine shuts off after hard bump in road
I have searched but can't see this subject but I have experienced it twice. First time Dodge dealer mechanics said it looked like weak fuel pump. Cost over $1200 way back around 2015 on my Ram. It is a 2500 model with V10. The discrepancy with shutting down after a hard bump happened less than 4 days later. But can't get money back because you have to sigh a waiver about how if the mechanic is stupid and changes the wrong thing you are still responsible to pay. I eventually figured it out due to checking online and doing some troubleshooting of my own reading the electrical part of a maintenance manual. It was caused by: a $12 relay called a "Auto Shutdown Relay" . It usually would start right back up, but one time had to have vehicle towed (hence being towed to a dealership). After it was towed guess what? Yep it started up at dealership and they couldn't figure out problem or what caused it. The reason I am writhing this is after about ten years, here I started seeing the signs of occasional shut off after hitting a bump. Sure enough I moved around the relays (there are 6 in my truck and everyone is the same number) the truck had no more problem. But I got one of those relay testers like on line and had ordered a couple more relays to replace the bad one if I could find it. It did indeed fail and I have now replaced it. So If you are having a shutdown occasionally after rough road or bump check out this relay for sure, it may save you many headaches and a lot of money.
And yes I was lucky too as I evidently put the bad one in the fuel injection relay spot and truck wouldn't start at first. So after scratching my head I moved it around and lucked out I put it in the trailer lamp relay which didn't bother anything. I wasn't sure if I had two relays bad so purchased the relay tester and found out it was only one that failed. Why Dodge didn't figure it out I do not know. Hopefully this helps someone.
