OK - i just picked up a 2000 2500 quad cab 5.9L 4x4 last night. I'm really happy with the truck. it's got a couple mechanical things i have to attend to, but nothing that's too major. one thing i noticed though, is that when you make turns, you can feel a "clunking" in the steering column. in fact, i can even feel it thru the gas & brake pedals, so it sounds like it's real close to the firewall, whatever it might be. We've got a '99 2500 4x4 5.9L at work that does the exact same thing too. (we've taken the '99 into shops, and they haven't found anything as of yet) when you're driving down the road straight, and hitting bumps, you can feel it every once in a while, but you really feel it when turning around a corner, or onto another street. I'm not exactly sure where to start looking, but any advice would be GREAT! Thank you in advance!

check your front u-joints my 98 was doing as you discribe and thats what it ended up being

check your steering box for pitman shaft bearing wear. I used to feel a slight clunk in the steering wheel until I changed the steering box.now it's like driving a new truck!!!!!

 

defenetly, check the steering box and track bar(wouldn't hurt to check the whole front end while you are under there.) Have seen the shaft running from the colum to the gear get loose and make noise.

 

From your description i would say i't prob. the innermediant shaft. It has a slip joint in it and if it is binding it will do this.
