CD player issues..
I burned a cd today and in the factory cd player, if you tried to skip to say track 9, it wouldnt play...it would come up as an error and go to the radio function...but if u let it play it will play track 9, like go track 1, 2, 3....7, 8, 9...and keep going, but if you tried to skip to anything higher then 9 it wouldnt play and read an error....it was a new cd so I didnt think that was the problem...should I try a cd cleaning kit or is this a common problem?
I had a 1998 Dodge Dakota with relatively the same problem. It would read regular store-bought cd's fine when i put in a burned cd, it would try and try to read it and sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldnt. When and if it decided that would play (burned cd), if I tried to seek to a different number it would do the same thing was what you described, just read Err. eject the cd, and go to the radio. I ended up fast forwarding to the songs i wanted and it was a pain in the u know what. My dad's 97' Ram would do the same thing. I now own a 1998 Dodge Ram, and it reads most burned cd's just fine, with the exception of a few brands for some reason....however i have found that i have had the best luck with either the white-faced MEMOREX cd's or a brand called TDX (dont get the black tdx cds). It's happened to me too, hope it helps!!!!!!
Personally, I would never again put a burned CD in a Mo-crap cd player. My factory Infinity CD player in my 01 Ram not only would not play a burned CD but decided that it was best to consume the thing and never return it forever displaying an error on the display. Wouldn't even show the clock LOL. I threw that damn thing about as far as I could and put in an Alpine with a built in XM receiver. That fixed the sh!tty CD player problem, just now to address the differential that puked its guts out. [:@]
Actually, it's a pretty common problem. Most of the cd players prior to 99-00 werent really built with burned cds in mind. The lasers in them werent really capable of reading the burned cds. It's not your cd player's fault.
The reading laser in your cd player just cant read them. It's like a normal cd-rom vs. a cd burner. The cd burner has the same laser as the cd-rom. The only difference is the laser is capable of reading AND burning the cd. It's just an extra amount of information implanted in the laser.
If you are having trouble with reading cd's on an older cd player, I suggest trying Memorex CD's. Most people I know that have had the cant read burned cd issue has been fixed by using them. They are pretty common in stores and they have a white label. The music cd style even has a music note on it. Those work really well for a few of the people I know with this issue.
The best option is to just get a different cd player. This isnt a factory issue or a malfunction of the unit. It's just old technology.
