I am looking at purchasing a 1998 Ram Sport with the 5.9 engine automatic trans and a 3.92 rear end with limited slip, my questions are, what kind of mileage can I expect? Does this year have any recalls? How are the trannies on these models and any problems with the 5.9 engine? Thank you.

Well alot of things depend on the milage on these. Theres a Sticky thread at the top of this forum and people with the 360 get anywhere from 10-17. Thats a big gap.
The cat has recently been "recalled". You can go to the dealer and have them do a flow test. But there was a milage cap and if your over it not covered. Call the dealer and have them check for you.
As for the trans, I feel its almost a 50/50 chance of having to rebuild. Mine has 110,000 on it with the original tranny, and other have 130k+ with the original. Others haven't been so lucky and have multiple rebuilds with less then 100,000 on it [&:]

my 5.9 is orginal and at 120,000 its still going strong. cant say the same about the trany. One Mopar reman and one rebuild after that. as far as milage goes don't expect to great. These trucks are made for power and pulling with that the fuel milage take a hit.
