Default Oil change step

Ok, I've been changing my own oil since I was old enough to drive. I have pretty much always done it the same way, and have never had any problems. I saw something that was new to me the other night watching a show about Corvettes. The mechanic was performing an oil change, and he filled the new oil filter with oil prior to installing it. I have always just put a little oil on the rubber surface with my finger, then screwed the oil filter up - but empty, never filling it up first.

Is it better to pre-fill the oil filter, and if so why, or does it make no difference at all. Anyone else do this step?

I fill mine about 1/2 way so I don't spill any when I put it on. If it were straight up I would fill it all the way. Just gets the oil running quicker.

I've never filled mine, in the 8 years I've been changing oil on my vehicles. Asked my dad...he says he's never done it in the 35 years he's been changing oil either...including the 15 years he worked as a certified Chrysler mechanic.

I've also never done that. I don't like the idea of possibly having to chisel the filter off if that oil decides to become a glue. My dad has told me some horror stories, so I always leave the seal dry when I install the filter. I know people claim it makes a better seal, but I've never had one leak yet...and I just spin mine on hand tight [>:]

I always put oil on the gasket but I have never filled the filter. I will give it a shot next oil change though.

i always fill it before i install the filter..unless its one of them retarded engines like the ricers thats has the oil filter cocked in an angle and all upside and crap... ive had that problem before though... using NEW oil and lubing the gasket with it..the next time i took it off and it was caked on there... ever since then i used the old crap oil that was just drained to lube the gasket..for some reason that old oil help is from not caking on...

funny story... not to be a thread thefe.. the first truck i ever owne was a 73 chevy 2x4 stepside... had a chevy 350 with a t350 tranny... (before i swapped in the 454) well doing the oilchange on it...i dont know what was wrong with me... young and retarded... i crawled underneath it (gravel driveway too..ouch!) opened the oil drain... drained it out... into a bucket.. all said and done..gout out and started to pour the new oil in.. wlel after a while letting all the oil get out of the bottles i notice oil comeing out from under the truck..like a lot!..i just figured the bucked dumped over.. i was young so i didnt care.. i got in it and cranked it up... after about 5 min and revvin the hell out of it...started to run really ruff...well i shut it down really quick.. checked everyting over..checked hte oil... no oil was in the motor... i was like WTF!!! looked underneath.... oooohhh yea... forgot to put the drainpul back in.... and the oil i saw was from the bucket overflowing with the mix of new and old oil... my dad wouldnt let me live it down for yEARS after that.

useless story.. sorry...just alittle bored tonight
