Default exhaust question

When I bought my truck the exhaust pipe ended with only a 2 foot pipe off the cat. What I want to know is am i losing performance or gas mi. with the exhaust like that? I dont know because its been like that since I've had the truck. The tell tale computer on the top shows that I'm getting 9.1 mpg

2001 1500 4 x 4 5.9 with a 4" lift with 35" tires

Is the cat gutted? If it is then your for sure loosing low end and MPG like that. I would do ahead and throw a Magnaflow or Flowmaster on there for a bit more back presure, that'll increase your low end and MPG. 9.1 seems pretty low, assuming you have a 5.9, cause if your getting that with a 5.2 something is really wrong. Or you have a lead foot
