I've had Cobra 29 Classics for years with good luck. The Cobra 29 and 148 models are the most popular radios for long haul truckers and dump truckers because there is a buch of ways to "hop them up" and lots of accessories for them. They are very durable also. Get a good antenna such as a K-40 and mount and tune it right for the best performance. Go to a cb shop at a big truck stop near you - you can usually find some good deals on new and used ones. Heres a couple pics of how I mounted mine:

I agree Cobra is to me one of the best. But also depends on how much you want to spend. Galaxy, RCI, The upper end Unidens(Same board as Cobra's. All depends on your money and what antenna you get of how good it will work.

Can't beat a Uniden PC78 Elite with a K40 antenna! They're not cheap though. The CB run around $115 and the K40 is $70+. But it's a sweeet setup. I have mine mounted just like Racinfan83 has his. Good setup, and you can still use the cupholder.

Yeah I like the Galaxys too - cause they have all the toys already in them....Hee,Heee! A lot of the dump truck guys around here quit using them and went back to Cobra because the Galaxys seem to not handle the abuse put on them every day in a dump truck. Cobra's seem to be more durable when getting beat to hell.....I have to agree with the rest of your post - good antenna and having it mounted and grounded properly makes a BIG difference.

I agree, Cobra is the way to go. I would spend the extra money and get one with upper and lower side band, just increases the potential of the radio.

My old Uniden worked really well over the years.
