RPM Jump !!Help!!
Ok here is the deal,
I own a 98' ram 4x4 5.9 with auto trans. about 3 months ago i noticed that at cruising speed going down the interstate, my RPM gauge would read a sudden jump of about 300 RPM or so every now and then at highway speed, not shifting into overdrive, but more like the transmission was slipping. I took it to a shop about a month later and they had the TPS replaced. That seemed to do the trick for the harsh jump in rpm, but now my RPM's still raise for no reason, only they slowly increase about 300 rpm or so....ex: at 70 mph, my truck normally runs at 2,000 rpm exactly......but every now and then it will go up to 2,300 rpm, speed still at 70 mph. I had a quick chat with a local mechanic, and he said it could be the Torque Converter slipping, as well as a number of other things. Does anyone agree with that statement that it could be the torque converter, or have any opinions of their own......???
Help !!!

if you just had the TPS replaced id say hes right in saying the TC s slipping it would br my first guess too. i see you have a 98 so you cant check codes on your own (i have a 98 as well we got the shaft on that lol) unles you have a programer so id take it to a shop and have the codes checked if it is the TC you should get a code telling you so, it sould also be the TC sionoide whitch would give a diff code
yes, if the fins are cracked in the TC and they break, they could take out the tranny along with it... get it looked at asap
edit... I had this problem happen to my Jeep GC a few years back... wasnt locking & unlocking right and when we pulled the pan off, there was a pile of metal in it...

Anyone have an idea what a new TC would cost ????
Whatever it is, I will be relieved if i caught a potential tranny problem early.....my last truck (1998 dakota) was not as lucky.

Wont get a chance to get it to a dealer until the end of the week. Went out and checked the tranny fluid and it looked fine.........maybe it is just a sionoide???
Hi, I have exactly the same problem just starting on my 98 5.2 4x4. It is almost exactly as you described. I did a 300k round trip yesterday and had a real chance to study the trans behaviour. If im running at about 2000 prm in OD or the same speed without OD it still does it, ie the rpm "jumps up " for a split second and then settles again. The trans works fine other than this little fault. I drove it hard, overtook a few cars during the trip, and really didnt notice any sign of slippage or anything else under hard excelleration. This " jump" in the revs seems to only occur when your at a steady throttle, or i can make it happen by quickly throttling off with my foot. It doesnt do it all the time, you can drive for miles with it not happening. Also, I noticed that it doesnt do it any where near as much on smooth road surface. If you hit a bump it almost always will do it if its during a "jump" period of activity. Also, I first noticed this over two months ago when I was driving home from work. It was during the first snows and at the time i thought that the rears had just lost grip for a second or so on a patch of ice, but two months have gone by without the problem and i can now see that what i thought was loss of grip was this problem beginning. Anyway, sorry if this has got confusing. Did you find out what was wrong with your tranny, or can anyone else shed some light on it ? It is almost as if there is a short in the OD button or circuit - no?
