Dropped trans pan and found this. What is it?
Dropped my transmission pan to do a fluid and filter change and adjust the bands as some preventative maintenance. I found this thingy in the pan. WTF is it and where does it go? It's about 1.25 inches tall by about an inch wide and has a wedge shape and a machined ball socket on one end.
Does it mean my transmission is on borrowed time? Need help fast, since the truck is sitting immobile in my driveway.
If it's not catastrophic, what transmission do I have and how many turns do I loosen the bands for adjustment? I can't find any definitive answers for a '98 2500 4x4 with the 5.9L V8.
Thanks in advance!

Yep, it's an automatic. Did a little digging and I believe it is the front band tensioning strut and it indicates that I'm just about due for a new transmission. At least it's in my driveway and not out on the highway with my car behind it on a trailer.
Anyone know any good rebuilders in the Cleveland area? Would a mail-order transmission be cost-effective? I have the skills to R&R the transmission myself, but not rebuild it.
Thanks.

Yeah, but I found this:

Looks like I'll be shopping for a new transmission pretty soon. Crap. Thanks for the help.

APS presicion (www.apsprecision.com ) builds Dodge Transmissions. If that is the band lug, they specifically point that out as a weak point as it is tack welded on. They used a forged band, which is obviously a lot stronger.
havnt heard anything but good things from APS... give them guys a call..

I rebuilt trannys for 7 years, and yeah, it is a band strut.
My guess is that it should be for reverse as the reverse band is known for breaking.
Do you still have reverse? They make a repair kit for in-vehicle fix.

Call a trans shop and ask.
The only problem you may have is that the landing on the band broke off which is why the strut fell down to begin with.
Like in my other post, reverse gets ALOT of apply pressure.
Its been this way since the 904/727s came out in the '60s.
If you decide to DYI, I'll give you as much help as I can.
