Default Pulling codes (search didn't help)

I did a search and it talks about this "on off" method of pulling codes. So I'm out there for the last half hour flicking the ignition on and off, pushing the trip reset button (got a nice dashboard test but no codes), doing 3 cycles, 4 cycles, 5 cycles, whatever. Doing it fast before the odometer has time to come on and doing it slow and cycling each time the odo comes on. Nothing.

Is my truck immune to this? It's a '98 2500 5.9L V8. I know I could buy a code reader, but my guess is that it is related to the transmission which I know is on the verge of failure. I'd hate to spend $50 just to confirm that hunch and pulling codes via the CEL would be great if it worked.

Thanks!

i've heard of this on older models... but try it one more time... on-off-on-off-(then leave it)on, the codes should appear on the odometer regardless of which display you have selected.

if that doesnt work, go to autozone and have them read the codes for you... they dont charge anything to do it.

edit: oh yeah, you dont have to rush it on the on-off cycles... too fast or too slow and it may not work

98 is a problematic year. Almost every owner that has tried pulling codes with the On-Off method has failed. It was the first year of the digital odometer, and apparently Chrysler decided to disable the owner's ability to retrieve codes.

Your best bet is to go to a place like Autozone or Checker or maybe Bumper To Bumper and have them read your codes.

ive dona a bunch of reserch on this i have a 98 as well.....the on off on methed dosent work on 98s and some early 99s they disabled the system like the burning rom sed but due to customer demand the put it back in in 99. the only way to get the codes out of there is to go somewhere and have them read or use a programer like superchip or hypertec

i have a '98 also and that method didn't work. i order a code reader for all OBDII systems on ebay for like $45 with shipping. alot of places charge about $30 to just check the codes once, so it seems better to spend the couple extra bucks and have the reader for keeps.
