My offroad model has skid plates maybe use those as a mock up.

 

I made a front diff cover guard, control arm skid plates and eventually I will make a T-case skid plate. All made of 1/4"
If you do make the T-case skid plate make sure you put a cross brace across the frame to attach it to. 1/4" is the way to go.
