Tranny leak
Hello,
Today I backed up in reverse for about 100 yards and my 1996 ram just died. It started back up but after all of this I have a problem in reverse. It leaks fluid like crazy and sounds like it's humming loud. when I put it in drive it quits leaking, the noise gos away and drives fine. It's coming from the bellhousing, not the pan. Has anybody experienced this before or have any ideas?
Thanks for any help!
Jason

Sounds like your converter seal is leaking. Or maybe it could be the converter itself, though I don't know why it would quit when you put it in drive. [>:] I'd definitely get it to a shop before it dies on you.
Why it would stop leaking in forward??? I am clueless there!
How fast were you backing? Automatics are not designed for fast backing or even a real long distance. As said before, high gear(3rd) is half of your reverse.
Parts are spinning opposite direction that shouldn't be, but thats just how it works.
The only possibility I can think of is the pump gasket.
Also, an internal pressure problem.
I'd pull the pan and do a change if theres no chunks laying in the pan.
Change the filter also.
The breather for these is at the top of the pump which is in the bell housing.Pressure issues will expell the fluid out here which most take as a pump seal leaking. If it were the seal, it would be leaking all the time.
There are different channels for the fluid. The humming is most likely the pressure regulator in the valve body(the thing that the filter bolts to).
Its tough to diagnose tranny problems without having it in front of me.
Just to many sounds and symptoms to describe here.
Do you still have reverse? The lip seal on the reverse apply servo may have been torn or blown off or even the piston itself cracked. That would allow pressure to build inside the pan area putting that pressure where it shouldn't be and only in reverse. The apply pressure for the reverse band is unbelievably high which is why the landings on the band itself can snap off, and we're talking about some beefy steel landings!
If you're near central Pa, bring 'er by!
