MPG CHECK!!!! after mods
hey guys... well finally got a good mpg check after i did all my mods... i am very pleased!!!!
before my mods i was getting on avg 230-240 miles to the tank witch came out to be
between 8.8 and 9.2 MPGs
before the mods i had a K&N CAI GENII, edelbrock junko rusto headers flowmaster 40 and dual 2.25 outs
the mods i did include.
MSD complete install - 6A box, 8.5MM wires, mopar perf distcap and rotor
Hughes Engines Alum plenum pan and gasket fix
elec fan conversion (dual 16" fans)
180 deg tstat
hypertech power programer PIII
and and unexpected brand new 46RE, TQ converter and tranny cooler with a modded vavle body
after 3 solid tanks of runing the truck 85% on the freeway my miles came up to
1st tank: 280
2nd tank: 320 (driving miss daisy,,, EXTREMLEY babied it)
3rd tank:310 (mostly freeway but a little more sidestreet intown driving
after the math is done im taking the 2nd and 3rd tanks as the 1st tank im atributing for the pcm to relearn istelf,,,
im looking at between 11.9 to 12.3 .. an impressive improvement .. to me atleast!!!
thats with 87 octane
im sitll getting minor pinging... im not sure if its really pinging or not..after iw as done with the mods and just watching the motor run checkin for leaks it sounded like it was pinging at idle..then i noticed the heat sheilds that sit between the heads and the motormounts were vibrating really bad and ironically making a "ping" noise .. not sure if its doing it while im driving or not... i still have the champion truck plugs in that were in it before ..prolly have 3000 miles on them... i just regaped them to .40 instead of the regular 35 they come in, (for the added spark of the MSD) im gonna get some autolites that are a notch colder and see if that makes any difference,, if not and its still there imgonna see what i can do about the heat sheilds near the motor mounts... the plugs are ready to be replaced anyway ... ill start another post for that so other members can check there shields to make sure there not rattling like mine are.
and i really cant bitch about that either...im running the truck with steel "rockcrawler" wheels and 265 70 17 tires (winter tires) with that tire and wheel combo working against my 4.10's im looking at a solid 2500 rpm at 75mph on OD on the free way... when i get my 33's my rpms will drop down to 2000 on the free way doing 75 with OD on, im not counting on a major improvement b/c the motor will have to work harder to spin the bigger tires but getting the 33's should keep my 4.10's nice and happy and it may get me better milieage oddly enough lol
anyway.. the truck is an 01 ram 5.9L sht box reg cab 4X4 offroad sport with 94500 miles on it
im really happy with the gains....mpg wise... and holy**** ... the thing screams!!!!! its a blast to drive now within the next year i plan on going with 1.7 RR's and hydrolic lifters to free up some HP amd MPG in the vavle train...and who knows..i might go as far as getting new R/T heads... along with that i still need to put in a new timing chain... i figured its gotta be stretched by now

i still gotta work out a few kinks on the electrical system for the fans.
i might see a bit better mpg when i change the tranny fluid to full syn atf4 the tranny shop put in atf3 with the tranny friction additive witch im not too fond of... im gonna let it run another tank then ill swap out the fluid,,figured it should be good and broken in after that!
