yeah Rockwells have a pinion brake, really not ideal for road driving. But pretty good for offroading. Most people do a disc brake conversion if the truck will see some street. And actually in some states a pinion brake is illegal.

pinion braking is illegal in all states..federal law i believe...rockwells are killer... arnt they like 15grand per axle?

i could fit them tires on my truck... i might rub a bit but i could live with it.... i would assume he's getting 30MPG in the city... easly!

Up here there are sets going for the $1000-1500 range. The front diffs are the hardest to find. But a bunch of people are finding them

What were those diffs originally from? I saw that topic on PS.com. Thats a nuts looking truck!! And why exactly would a pinion brake be illegal?

Man I think thats over done. Not that I woudnt want to drive it once mind you.. I just dont think the over all balance of the truck is a good one. Its in between a monster turck and truck with big wheels.

You can pick up 2.5 ton rockwells for pretty cheap. I can get fronts for $350 and rears for 300. Thats a complete axle without wheels.
The 5 ton axles are bit more expensive

The axles originally come from M80 military trucks and such.

I dont know the "true" reason for Pinion brakes being illegal but Im sure it has somrthing to do with haveing the ability to lock both axles up and they arent make for high speed braking being the vehicles that had them had very low top speeds and werent built for daily driving and they also weighed 3 time what our trucks weigh.
