Default Custom CAI vs K&N FIPK?

Ok if I build myself a custom CAI using what this guy did:
http://home.insightbb.com/~jbenner/m...abs_intake.htm
And used a K&N Filter, and built a heat sheild around the filter that meets up with the hood to ensure little to no heat enters the filter, how would that rate against just buying the K&N CAI ?

I figure i can get away with this for under 100 bucks and still achieve the same performance, but what do yall think?

Looks good. Probably the best looking home made CAI I have seen. You have good filter location and if you have a heat shield (didn't see that in any of the pictures), you will have pretty much duplicated the K&N FIPK. Are you using something to support it so the weight of the filter down at the end of the tube is not pulling down on the airhat up at the TB? That would be my only suggestion.

Don't know if you have done it, but you should remove the rubber flap up on the radiator support so you get more air right on your filter.

I am planning on building that same set-up and atleast giving it a shot. I have the Dakota air hat, paid 15 bucks for it at a local salvage. He forgot to mention that the filter he used is the one for a late model Escalade, so you should be able to go to your local auto parts store and ask for the K&N filter for the Escalade. We have 2 of them in stock at the AutoZone I work at so I don't think finding one would be a problem. I have to work off my exhaust debt though before I can finsish what I started with that CAI, but I agree, with a heat shield that should be the next best thing and to save 200 bucks at the same time......awesome!! That guy does have a pretty bad *** truck too, is he a member on here?

It would be worth a try, I know the lady that runs the salvage because the shop I work at in the summer time always buys stuff there, so she may have hooked me up with a little bit of a better deal but it would be worth seeing what a salvage wants for one that way you wont get ripped off.

That guy did a nice job on that, but I'm not sure what all the hacksaw blade trimmin was about. Seems like he coul have just modified his s hook.
Did he spend some time with all of that convolute wire loom or what?

Hacksaw blade trimming - He used a hacksaw to trim the pipe, it left rough score marks on the end of the tubing. So instead of leaving all that gunk he smoothed it out on the edges. This helps from little pieces becoming dislodged from the ends of the pipe and going into the engine.
Also helps with putting the piping together nice and snuggly.

You can't be too clean about this kinda stuff i guess...
