Default Going from diesel to gasser

Well, I've had this 02 Cummins for about a year now, and because of recent changes in my life, I need to switch to something a little more economical. I want to find a 99-01 1500 V8 Sport.

My question to you guys is this:

Between 99 and 01, are there any model years that have certain problems or certain advantages over the others in terms of design flaws or something that limits you from upgrading the HP much past stock?

On the diesels, there are a lot of quarks that make some model years better for making HP or towing than others, such as better fuel pumps or the switch to 4 wheel disc brakes. Are the gasser 1500's the same way?

Thanks everyone.

The 2001 was the last year for production, by then they fixed whatever body quirks and what not that couldve been prevalent...

The most common would be the rear leaf springs squeaking, they still didnt fix that in 01 LOL. Also in most dodges (even diesals) the doors did tend to rust from inside out (Just checked mine out today and no rust).

As for the engines, they were the same in the 99-01 production years (and even back towards 96 when OBD II was out). They each have their quirks, however not too many big engine related problem differences between the 5.2 and 5.9. Most common i've heard/seen would be definetly the transmission (46RE, 44RE, 48 RE (i think thats right) are not that great, but will last if you take care of it nice enough, but even then doesnt help). Also, its common in these trucks to have a bad catylitic convertor, just check with the dodge dealership to see if you qualify for a new cat.

The power diff between the 5.2 and 5.9 is not too great of a difference, and the aftermarket part for each are almost switchable. Don't let these quirks and what not discourage you from getting a gasser, ever since i bought mine I havent had a single complaint that was too serious to turn me off

well if you're looking for something more economical you might want to go for a neon.. or the new caliber. these gas guzzlers are not much better than the diesels. the 5.9 gets about 12-15 mpg average. some of us have gotten as high as 16-17. if i remember correctly the diesels got around 18-20 minimum. you'll probably be spending the same about of cash to fuel up.

the major differences in the 96-01 years is the transmissions they improved them greatly over the latter years, still not great, but better.

yeah look at me talking.. my 01 tranny is going out after about 40k miles... ARG!!!!

i think they made a 2002 2500 truck with the 2gen chassis engine and body.. hard to find though

i agree with crazy... i would wreckin youd be getting better mpg with a CTD then you would if you were to switch to a gasser... unless you do some decent mods to a 5.2L i would assume it could get about the same or little better then the CTD but minus alot of the HP and TQ

If it weren't for some recent crap going on, I would keep my CTD, but the payments are killing me... my payment and insurance add up to $650 a month... it's not the gas that's killing my wallet.

The gassers I'm lookin' at are half the price and the insurance is cheaper, that's where it's at!

I need to have a truck for work, or I'd get a neon.
