code 0442 and sputtering
As soon as I pulled out yesterday, my '01 5.9L ram started sputtering, hard. The check engine light was on and a code of 0442 came up when I did the "key trick."
From what I've read here, the two most likely things are a bad gas cap or EVAP canister (please correct me if I'm wrong). At least as far as the code goes, not sure about the sputtering.
The sputtering happened once in the past, but cleared up after running high test for a day. No check engine light that time though.
And there was no sputtering when I took it out just now (at least for the moment), but the light is still on. What's the recommended course of action?
Thanks for your help with this.

whats teh key method, my check engine light has been comeing on recently, but everytime i'm about to take it to my buddys shop to hook up the diagnosis machine or w/e the light goes off, i'd deffinately be interested in any way to check codes on the spot without having to buy a programmer or w/e

Even if your light goes out, the code that was set should still be stored in the PCM for the next 51 start cycles. Your friend should still be able to read it with his diagnostic machine that way.
